Okiciyapi Tipi Habitat For Humanity Newsletter
Fall/Winter, 2007
At 2007 HFH-SD Annual Banquet OTHFH Named Supporter of the Year for the Midwest Region | Board Chairman Bachman received the following letter from Regional O.D, Jeri Lemke which is printed below:
"It
is with great pride that I write to inform you, your colleagues and
your staff members that the Okiciyapi Tipi HFH affiliate has been named
as HFH-I’s “Best Supporter of the Year for the Midwest Region.”
Thanks
to the progressive attitudes toward increasing capacity, the Board of
Directors of the Okiciyapi Tipi affiliate has been demonstrating new
types of partnerships with their local banks whereby they’ve spent
their last two build seasons doing some massive rehabbing projects in
their service area. To date, 25 homes have been rehabbed using
volunteers from overseas and all over the U.S. We have since hosted
thousands of volunteers and more recently, several Thrivent Build
worldwide groups. In an effort to help bolster the missions of the
small rural affiliates in this country. They have also allowed the
recent nomination of their Executive Director, Jerry Farlee for a three
year term on the U.S. Council for Habitat for Humanity International.” | |

| | | New Construction Curtailed Due to Water Shortage | | | This
past year on the Cheyenne River Reservation our construction was
curtailed due to a continuing drought. Because drinking water was being
rationed, we had to come up with different ideas. One of the ideas we
were able to implement was to work with the area banks - First
Financial Bank of Dupree SD and the State Bank of Eagle Butte to work
on rehabbing elderly, handicapped and very low income families’ homes
this past spring and summer. To date, 25 homes have been rehabbed with
new roofs, bathrooms, handicap ramps, gutters, windows, floors, etc.
We would like to thank both Banks for their help.
Because of the success we have had with the Rehab program we have now
expanded with two area banks and a non profit organization. This
program will improve many families quality of life.

Message from the Director
Hello to all my Habitat Friends!
Well another year is soon to come to an end. We are so Thankful for our
blessings. We completed 12 rehabs this past year which was in
partnership with one of our local lenders. This has turned into a
wonderful venture as the next two years we will be in a partnership
with 2 local banks, another non profit, and the partner families. Many
of our current homeowners have been living in their homes for 14 years
and would like to upgrade their homes, but cannot afford it. With this
program they will save money in an escrow account. For every dollar
they save the banks will match a dollar and the other non profit will
match a dollar. When they have reached their goal they will be able to
apply their saving, the banks contribution and the non profits
contribution towards their home
We have started construction on two new homes for this coming season.
One in Eagle Butte and the other in the community of Glencross. This
has been made possible through the support of all you wonderful people
and your monetary gifts. We have also had the Wojan Company of Michigan
donate the material for over $200,000 worth of windows and a wonderful
gentleman from Saline Michigan by the name of Jim Trainor has
volunteered to build them. At this time both of our new homes have the
footings poured and are waiting for spring. The 2008 Construction
Season will start in March with collegiate groups arriving. We have a
need for many, many volunteer groups this upcoming season. We still
have several dates open so if you are considering volunteering think
about coming here in 2008, we need you.
PLEASE CONSIDER SENDING US A DONATION! It seems we never have enough
funds to build with. At this time we have over 180 families who are
homeless. In our building plans we had planned on another home for
2008, but have not been able to raise adequate funds at this time. So
PLEASE think of us during this Holiday Season. My family, the staff and
the Board of Directors WISH YOU ALL A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A JOYOUS NEW
YEAR. GOD BLESS YOU ALL.

| | | Greetings from the Construction Supervisor
We
have an exciting 2008 Building Season coming up. We are building two
homes here on Cheyenne River Reservation this year. One will be located
here in Eagle Butte and the other will be located in the northeast part
of the reservation in a small community by the name of Glencross.
Our other projects for 2008 are a playground, rehabbing 15 homes, and
installing a number of new windows in existing homes.
I am looking forward to meeting all the new volunteers and catching up
with the old friends whom have been coming out here every year.
Be ready to build, build, build! We are all very excited about being able to build new homes.
Wish you all Happy Holidays!
