"Our car bumped slowly over a track in the grasslands that could not really be called a road, rather it was the prairie leaning in a certain direction to indicate where others had gone before and inviting us to follow.

A thunderhead of gigantic proportions intervened between us and the setting sun, ominous roiling gray limned in outbursts of scarlet and orange.  Lightning bolts punctuated the cloud, but the rest of the sky was quiet, and painted in sunset shades.

We stopped the car to admire the sky, and into this tableau stepped a pronghorn antelope buck.  We regarded each other curiously for several long moments, with the western sky rapidly darkening behind him. The buck's curiosity satisfied, he turned to rejoin the does and fawns.

As the light faded, we continued back to the road, observing a herd of white-tail deer. We bounced and swerved between the prairie dog and black footed ferret mounds and finally regained the highway, where no fewer than 9 ghostly apparitions in the form of huge barn owls rose up in the headlights and swooped directly over our windshield.

Driving through the reservation, you are never more than a moment away from another new discovery."
